Know what goes where

Map the cables before you hide them

Make a simple connection map so tidying the desk does not make the next change harder.

A tidy bundle is less helpful if you cannot tell which lead belongs to which device. Before adding ties, clips or a box, make a small connection map. The aim is to preserve access and make everyday changes understandable. You do not need a new organizer to do this exercise.

01

Name the two ends

For each lead, note the device at one end and what it connects to at the other. Use ordinary names you will recognize later. Keep this map private if it contains device identifiers or other details you do not want to share.

02

Distinguish permanent and movable connections

Identify the leads you disconnect daily, such as a laptop cable, and those that remain in place. Keep frequent connections accessible. If bundling them would require undoing the whole arrangement each morning, use a different route.

03

Label without guessing

Only label a cable when you have confirmed its two endpoints. A label describing where it goes is different from a claim about its electrical or data capabilities. Check the manufacturer’s documentation for those capabilities; connector appearance alone is not enough.

04

Choose the organizer after the route

A clip can keep one lead accessible; a tie groups several; a sleeve covers a run. The CableDrop page linked here is an example of a clip with size variants. Match any holder to your cable and surface, leaving room for normal movement and following its instructions.

05

Test one ordinary change

Try removing the device you most often take away, then returning it. Check that the remaining connections are still identifiable and accessible. Keep the map somewhere convenient and update it when the setup changes. If the route already works, there may be nothing to buy.
