A laptop stand takes up space as well as creating it. Before buying one, decide whether the laptop lives on your desk or travels with you. A stand that looks tidy in a photograph can be awkward if it blocks a notebook, pushes your keyboard forward, or needs packing away every evening.
01
Mark out the footprint first
Lay a piece of paper where the stand would sit. Keep your usual keyboard, mouse and notebook in place. Open the laptop fully and check that the screen does not collide with a shelf or monitor. This simple mock-up tells you more about fit than a photograph of an empty desk.
02
Fixed versus folding
A fixed stand makes sense when you have a permanent place for it. A folding stand deserves a look when your desk becomes a dining table or you carry your setup. Compare adjustment range, folded size, surface grip and the support lip. These are tradeoffs to check, not evidence that one design is universally better.
03
A concrete example: Rain Design mStand
Rain Design lists the mStand as a fixed, single-piece aluminum stand measuring 10 inches wide, 7.5 inches deep and 5.9 inches high. The manufacturer also describes a cable opening and space underneath for a keyboard. These are published specifications, not our measurements or a claim that it fits every laptop.
04
What could rule it out
Skip a fixed-height design if you need frequent height changes, or if the footprint covers the space you use for writing. Plan where your keyboard and pointing device will go before raising the laptop. Check the manufacturer’s compatibility information for your exact device and case.
05
Before you spend
Compare the dimensions against your paper mock-up. Check the exact model name: mStand and mStand360 are different products. Confirm what is included, the final delivered cost and the return conditions. If moving the laptop to another part of the desk solves the problem, you may not need a new stand.
