Make room below the screen

Monitor riser or storage shelf?

Check the monitor base, drawer clearance and usable desktop before adding another shelf.

A riser with a drawer combines two jobs: supporting a monitor and hiding small essentials. That can be useful on a small desk, but only when the monitor base fits and the drawer is easy to reach. Start with what you want to store underneath, then work upward.

01

Measure the monitor base, not the display

The screen’s diagonal size does not tell you how much space its feet occupy. Measure the base front to back and side to side. Leave room for the rear cables and check the complete monitor weight against the stand’s stated limit. Do not assume a large display has a small central foot.

02

Budget space for the drawer to open

A drawer needs clear space in front of it. Put your keyboard and mouse where you normally use them, then consider how you would reach the drawer during a working day. If you must move everything each time, an open shelf or a separate organizer may suit you better.

03

A concrete example: IKEA ELLOVEN

IKEA lists the white ELLOVEN stand, article 504.747.70, at 18½ inches wide, 10¼ inches deep and 4 inches high, with a maximum load of 44 pounds. Its stated internal drawer size is 17¾ by 9½ inches. Check the linked listing for the current specifications of the exact variant.

04

When to choose something else

A fixed riser is a poor match if you need adjustable height or if your monitor already sits at the position you prefer. Compare an open shelf if your main need is keyboard parking. Consider a separate drawer organizer if storage is the only problem.

05

Make the final check

Sketch the footprint and drawer clearance together. Confirm the monitor base is fully supported, inspect the assembly instructions, and include delivery in your cost comparison. This guide evaluates fit on paper; we have not tested the stand or its load capacity.
